When Joyann Hernandez founded Sunflower Environmental Compliance Group LLC in Morenci back in 2020, she built it on the belief that protecting the environment and strengthening a community go hand in hand. As a woman-owned small business and EHS (Environmental, Health & Safety) consulting firm, Sunflower Environmental helps businesses navigate complex compliance requirements — but what may surprise you is how much they give back right here in Greenlee County.
Making an Impact in April
This spring was a busy one for Sunflower Environmental. In April, the company announced the winners of its Greenlee County STEAM Teacher Grant — Norma Chairez and Vanessa Torres. This $250 grant supports public school teachers in Greenlee County in purchasing supplies for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics lessons. Congratulations to both winners! Applications for the 2027 grant cycle will open again in January.
Sunflower Environmental also sponsored two teams at the Safford Track and Field Golf Tournament on April 11th, and hosted a Bike Bus with Metcalf Elementary School — complete with free helmets for the kids. On April 25th, the team organized a street clean-up in Morenci, one of several community beautification efforts they lead throughout the year.
Mark Your Calendar
The next community clean-up is set for September 19, 2026, on Coronado Road from 8:00–11:00 a.m. Come out, grab some gloves, and help keep Greenlee looking its best. All are welcome.
Are You a Runner or Cyclist?
Here’s one you might not know about: Sunflower Environmental has an open race team!
